AboutMatawhero
Matawhero began with the pioneering winegrowing work of Bill and Denis Irwin in Gisborne. Kirsten and Richard Searle bought the vineyard and winery from Denis in 2008 and restored the property. The small church pictured on its labels has been part of Matawhero’s identity since 1975.
Matawhero works with dry-farmed vineyards across Tairāwhiti-Gisborne, from Riverpoint in the Central Valley to the clay slopes of Hexton Hills and the warmer Patutahi Plateau.

Ripe peach and melon lead a generous bouquet, joined by praline, nougat and a measured touch of vanilla. The palate is rich and weighty, with a creamy oak-shaped texture balanced by fresh acidity and a clean line of citrus. Generous without becoming heavy, it finishes long and harmonious. Pair with roast chicken, salmon or buttery mushroom dishes.
