AboutMarkus Altenburger

Markus Altenburger works in Jois, where the Leithaberg slopes meet Lake Neusiedl and limestone alternates with schist. He began his own wine project in 2006. Blaufränkisch is the main focus, alongside white wines from Neuburger, Chardonnay and other varieties.

The vineyards are farmed organically and worked by hand. Spontaneous fermentation features across the range, with concrete and large, neutral wooden vessels chosen according to the parcel.

The release is classified as Leithaberg DAC and represents the Jois expression of this grape.

Markus Altenburger 2020 Blaufränkisch Vom Kalk

Austrian Red
$56.99

Ruby-garnet colour with violet reflections accompanies hibiscus, red berries and fresh cherries. Candied violet and lemon are present, with fine tannin and a saline finish. Blaufränkisch grows on clay and limestone. The wine ferments spontaneously, matures for almost a year in large neutral wooden casks, and is bottled without technical or chemical aids. It contains twelve percent alcohol.

Markus Altenburger 2019 Neuburger betont.

Austrian White
$54.99

Yellow apple, pear and citrus meet white flowers, gentle spice and a savoury mineral note.
