Kirin Brewery traces its history to the Japan Brewery Company, founded in 1885, whose brewing business the newly established Kirin Brewery took over in 1907. German engineers and imported German materials helped shape its early brewing. A formal research department followed in 1918.
Ichiban, launched in 1990, is brewed using only the first wort drawn from the mash.
