AboutHowling Bluff Estate Winery
Howling Bluff Estate Winery is the Smith family’s small estate on the Naramata Bench, born after Luke and Jennifer Smith bought a fallow property in 2003 and established the winery the following year. Luke’s interest in wine had been growing for decades, and the move to Naramata turned that long-held ambition into a hands-on family enterprise. The vineyard was planted to Pinot Noir, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, with Pinot Noir eventually becoming the estate’s central pursuit.
Production remains deliberately small-lot, with the family growing the fruit and making the wines on the estate. The name came from an early morning when the family’s dogs began howling on the bluff.
Howling Bluff Estate Winery 2023 Pinot Gris
Crisp and fruit forward, with juicy stone fruit and melon leading into a bright line of Meyer lemon. Partial lees stirring and malolactic fermentation add texture and aromatic lift without dulling the easy-drinking freshness. Hand-picked fruit was split between two vessels and fermented with different yeasts, giving the clean, lively palate a little extra dimension through the finish.
Howling Bluff Estate Winery 2022 Century Block Pinot Noir
Kirsch, blackcurrant and raspberry appear with leather, forest floor and pepper. Pinot Noir clones 667 and 777 grow beside the wine shop in the riverbed of the now-dry Three Mile Creek. The block’s name refers to the hundred different species that once grew there. Maturation lasts eighteen months in French oak barrels. Production totalled 250 cases, and the wine can be cellared for up to ten years.
Howling Bluff Estate Winery 2022 Three Mile Creek Pinot Noir
Tobacco, ripe cherry, pepper and clove appear with mulled berries, blackcurrant and baking spices. Pinot Noir clones 667 and 777 come from the Three Mile Creek vineyard, whose oldest vines grow only five metres from the Century Block. Maturation lasts eighteen months in French oak barrels. Production totalled 305 cases. The vineyard has received two Lieutenant Governor’s Awards of Excellence and a Red Wine of the Year from the Canadian Wine Awards.
Howling Bluff Estate Winery 2021 Three Mile Creek Pinot Noir
Sour cherry and raspberry form a tart, cool red-fruit profile with savoury and earthy notes. The vines include Pinot Noir clones 115, 667 and 777 and were twenty-two years old when reviewed. Fruit receives a two-day cold soak. After three weeks, the wine is pressed into French oak barrels and aged there for eighteen months. Further acidic fruit appears on the finish.
Howling Bluff Estate Winery 2025 Sauvignon Blanc Sémillon Okanagan Valley
Ripe citrus, honeysuckle and pineapple rise first, followed by green apple and honeydew. The palate is bright and clean, with enough fruit weight to soften its brisk acidity without losing definition. A lightly floral, refreshing finish makes this a polished match for shellfish, fresh cheeses, summer salads or simply a well-chilled glass before dinner.
