Grupo Modelo traces its beginning to 1922 in Tacuba, Mexico, where twelve founders led by Braulio Iriarte Goyeneche united behind plans for a modern brewery. Cervecería Modelo opened on 25 October 1925, serving its dark lager first to a crowd of more than ten thousand guests. Canned Modelo Especial followed in 1966. Grupo Modelo joined AB InBev in 2013.

The palate is light yet flavourful, balancing gentle cereal sweetness with restrained hops before a dry, refreshing finish. Serve cold with tacos, grilled prawns, ceviche or charred corn; a wedge of lime is optional rather than necessary, as the beer’s own citrus lift is already nicely defined.
