AboutFreemark Abbey
Freemark Abbey’s Napa Valley story began in 1886, when Josephine Tychson built and ran a winery near St Helena, becoming one of California’s earliest recorded female vintners. The present name dates to 1939, when Charles Freeman, Marquand Foster and Albert “Abbey” Ahern reopened the property after Prohibition and combined parts of their names.
In the 1976 Judgment of Paris, Freemark Abbey was the only winery represented in both the red- and white-wine tastings. Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay remain its focus, with single-vineyard Cabernets from Bosché and Sycamore in Rutherford.
Freemark Abbey 2020 Napa Valley Chardonnay
Apple cobbler, crème brûlée and ripe pineapple open with orange marmalade and fresh peach. The palate is supple and integrated, layering stone fruit, candied lemon zest, baking spice, ambrosia and vanilla through a creamy texture. Vibrant acidity keeps the richness balanced, carrying the fruit into a long, nuanced and lingering finish.
