AboutDuvel Moortgat

Duvel Moortgat grew from the farm brewery founded by Jan-Léonard Moortgat and his wife in Puurs, Belgium, in 1871. Their son Albert later brought a yeast strain back from Scotland to brew an English-ale-inspired beer; the brewery still cultures that strain today. Originally called Victory Ale, the beer became Duvel in 1923 after a local taster likened it to a devil—the meaning of its Flemish name.

Four generations of the Moortgat family have continued the brewing tradition. The original Duvel is brewed with barley malt and Slovenian and Czech hops, then undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle and six weeks of cold-cellar maturation.

Duvel Belgian Strong Golden Ale 330 mL

Belgian Beer
$6.99
Pear, apple and a light citrus lift meet fine spice and a clean, persistent hop note. Bottle refermentation gives Duvel its lively effervescence and generous white head, while extended cold-cellar maturation keeps the 8.5% ale refined and balanced. The palate is smooth yet dry through the finish, with subtle bitterness and warming strength held in unusually precise balance.
