AboutDiego Conterno
After two decades at Conterno-Fantino, Diego Conterno began his own Monforte d’Alba project in 2000; the first vintage under his name followed in 2003. His son Stefano shares the vineyard and cellar work at the family estate. The vineyards sit in Monforte, including a holding in Ginestra and the west- to southwest-facing Ferrione slope just outside the Barolo zone.
The family converted its vineyards to organic farming, with certification following in 2014. Cellar work includes native-yeast fermentations and the use of large oak vessels and cement tanks.
Diego Conterno 2023 Baluma Langhe Nebbiolo
Italian Red
Red berries, cherries, wild flowers and warm spice appear in a medium-bodied profile with silky texture and ripe tannins. Nebbiolo comes from the Ferrione vineyard near Monforte d'Alba, on a west- to southwest-facing slope with clay and calcareous marl. The grapes are harvested by hand and destemmed. Fermentation uses native yeasts, followed by five months in 500-litre oak and four months in cement.
Diego Conterno 2023 Ferrione Barbera d’Alba
Italian Red
Lively red fruit and plum open with warm spice, giving way to a fresh, medium-bodied palate. Fine-grained tannins provide gentle shape, while good balance keeps the fruit clear and energetic through the finish. Polished and versatile, it suits grilled sausage, tomato-based pasta or slowly braised meat.
