DAB takes its name from Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei, the Dortmund brewery founded in 1868 by merchants Laurenz Fischer, Heinrich and Friedrich Mauritz, and master brewer Heinrich Herberz. The brewery adopted that name in 1872 and began sending casks overseas in 1879, reaching India, Japan and Australia. In 1881, Carl Linde supervised the installation of refrigeration equipment that kept the cellars cool throughout the year and helped establish the brewery’s bottom-fermented lager production. Dortmund remains its brewing home.
