Cooperativa de Gandesa

Cooperativa de Gandesa was founded in 1919 by forty-eight local families rebuilding their vineyards and livelihoods after the phylloxera crisis. Members mortgaged their land, pooled resources and helped build the winery and oil mill designed by Cèsar Martinell. Its Catalan vaults and undulating brickwork remain part of the historic cellar, with modern production facilities alongside.

Terralta vermouth, first made there in 1932, helped sustain the cooperative through the difficult years after the Civil War. When imported spices became unavailable in 1946, the members adapted the recipe using local botanicals.
