Clos Saint-Jean

Edmond Tacussel founded Clos Saint-Jean in 1905; his original red blend remains the model for the estate’s principal Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Pascal and Vincent Maurel lead the family estate, with Valentin, Hugo and Claire representing the next generation.

Forty-seven hectares of vines lie chiefly on the appellation’s emblematic rounded pebbles, including historic holdings on the plateau of La Crau. The vineyards include old Grenache, with sand and red clay among the soils of its different parcels. Concrete vats and barrel ageing share the cellar, while the estate credits its 2003 encounter with the late oenologist Philippe Cambie with a decisive change in direction.
