Clos du Val
AboutClos du Val
Clos du Val was founded by the Goelet family in Napa Valley in 1972, following winemaker Bernard Portet’s two-year search across four continents for a site suited to Bordeaux varieties. Its debut 1972 Cabernet Sauvignon was among the six California Cabernets poured at the 1976 Judgment of Paris. Third-generation owner Olav Goelet now works alongside winemaker Carmel Greenberg.
The estate farms Hirondelle Vineyard in Stags Leap District and Riverbend Vineyard in Yountville. Cover crops, grazing sheep and habitat for pollinators are part of its vineyard care.
Clos du Val 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Cranberry, red plum and cherry open with cassis, lavender and savoury touches of thyme and sage. The palate is medium to full-bodied yet fresh, framed by fine-grained, supple tannins and balanced acidity. A quiet mocha note adds depth without obscuring the fruit, and the finish is long, smooth and focused. Decant briefly and serve with grilled beef, lamb chops or roasted mushrooms.
