AboutClau de Nell
Clau de Nell is an Anjou estate at Ambillou-Château, with vines rooted in clay, flint and tuffeau limestone in the Loire Valley. Anne-Claude Leflaive and her husband, Christian Jacques, bought the property in 2008. The vines had been farmed biodynamically since 2000.
Christian Jacques works with estate manager Sylvain Potin, whose background is in biodynamic farming. Alongside red-wine parcels several decades old, Chenin Blanc has been planted since 2012 on limestone-rich ground.
Clau de Nell 2018 Cabernet Franc
Bright red cherry and blackberry meet peppery spice, graphite and a restrained touch of cedar. The palate is full yet composed, with ripe tannins, fresh acidity and a supple, savoury finish. Biodynamic farming and stainless-steel ageing keep the fruit clear and energetic. Decant briefly and serve with lamb, mushrooms or lentils.
Clau de Nell 2018 Chenin Blanc
Lemon, chalk and a gentle yeasty note lead into a broad, finely textured palate. Ageing on fine lees in seasoned French oak brings creaminess and quiet depth, while bright citrus, salinity and mineral grip keep the finish poised. Biodynamically grown and bottled without fining or filtration, it pairs beautifully with roast chicken, richer fish dishes or aged goat cheese.
