AboutChâteau du Hureau
Château du Hureau is the Vatan family’s estate at Dampierre-sur-Loire, where Philippe Vatan began making wine alongside his father Georges in 1987. The wines are made in cool underground cellars created by quarrying the local tuffeau stone.
Around twenty hectares are spread over roughly twenty parcels in Dampierre-sur-Loire, Souzay-Champigny and Saumur. Cabernet Franc accounts for most of the vines, with a smaller area of Chenin. The estate moved to organic farming in 2009 and is certified by Ecocert.
Château du Hureau 2023 Saumur-Champigny Tuffe
Ripe cherry, plum and licorice root open with a silky, plush feel. Alder smoke and tobacco leaf add savoury depth, while dried violet, pepper and sage bring lift and detail. Elegant and light on its feet, the palate remains composed through a firm, incense-tinged finish. Serve with roast beef, grilled mushrooms, lentils or herbed sausages.
Chateau du Hureau 2018 Saumur-Champigny Les Fevettes
Rich red-cherry in colour, with refined fruit, mulberry, dusky plum, perfumed cassis and dried violet on the nose. The palate is well balanced and seriously structured, combining red and black fruit with warm spice and savoury depth. Silky, fine-grained tannins shape the wine before a smooth, precise and very long finish.
Château du Hureau 2017 Lisagathe Saumur-Champigny
Cabernet Franc comes from old vines rooted in clay and sand over Turonian limestone. Harvesting is by hand, followed by sorting and complete destemming. Maceration lasts twenty-five to thirty-five days, and malolactic fermentation takes place in tank. The wine matures for eighteen to twenty-four months in foudres and barrels. Its profile combines depth and power with finesse.
Château du Hureau 2013 Saumur Blanc Argile
Gingerbread and white raisin lead, joined by ripe orchard fruit, white flowers and a light almond note. The palate shows mature breadth but remains well defined, with pithy citrus, fresh acidity and a gentle mineral grip. Layered and savoury, it finishes long with subtle spice and earthy precision.
Château du Hureau 2020 Saumur Blanc Argile
Apricot and Anjou pear lead, followed by white flowers and fresh citrus. The palate is succulent yet focused, with bright acidity shaping ripe white and exotic fruit into a clean, tonic line. A subtle mineral grip adds texture and precision, carrying the wine through a long, layered and gently floral finish.
