Château de Saint Cosme
AboutChâteau de Saint Cosme
Fifteen generations of the Barruol family have made their home at Château de Saint Cosme in Gigondas. Its Gallo-Roman winery still contains fermentation vats cut directly into the rock, while an eleventh- and twelfth-century Romanesque chapel stands among the vines.
Old vines sit where two geological faults meet, in a cool, late-ripening pocket shaped by the Dentelles de Montmirail. Henri Barruol was pursuing organic farming in 1972, and the estate now follows biodynamic practices. Alongside estate-grown Gigondas, Saint Cosme makes wines from grapes sourced elsewhere in the Rhône.
Château de Saint Cosme 2024 Côtes du Rhône
French Red
Intense white pepper, ripe black cherry and wild herbs shape a perfumed profile, joined by peppery red and black fruit, spice and mineral character. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh, focused and balanced, with a savory aftertaste. This red wine is made entirely from Syrah grown in the southern Rhône, and it carries the Côtes du Rhône appellation.
Saint Cosme 2023 Crozes-Hermitage
French Red
Black fruit, smoked bacon, cracked pepper and incense lead a savoury, aromatic nose. The palate has more structure than the appellation's flatter-ground examples, with dark Syrah fruit, firm tannins and a mineral line carrying through the finish. Meaty, peppery and composed rather than heavy, it is a strong match for grilled lamb, mushrooms or slow-cooked onions.
