AboutCastello di Ama

Four families from Rome founded Castello di Ama in 1976, restoring the vineyards and cellar of an estate in the Chianti Classico village of Ama. Winemaker Marco Pallanti arrived in 1982; Lorenza Sebasti, daughter of a founding partner and now the estate’s chief executive, joined in 1988.

The vineyards spread through four nearby valleys at 430 to 520 metres, with individual parcels bottled separately. Alongside its Sangiovese wines, experiments with Merlot led to L’Apparita, first made in 1985. Contemporary artworks created especially for Ama are installed throughout the property, becoming part of its buildings and landscape.

Castello di Ama 2015 L’Apparita Merlot

Italian Red

Blackberry, black cherry and plum are layered with violet, black olive, vanilla, black pepper and juniper. The palate is full and enveloping, yet freshness keeps the dark fruit poised and precise. Silky, powerful tannins provide a firm frame, while balsamic herbs, tobacco and a mineral edge add savoury complexity. The finish is exceptionally persistent, carrying ripe fruit, spice and polished structure in balance.
