AboutCasal Sta. Maria
Baron Bodo von Bruemmer found the Colares property in the early 1960s, choosing it as the place where he could begin a new family tradition. Its granite-framed main house dates to 1720 and survived the 1755 earthquake, while the estate’s earlier wine production had ceased by 1903. The modern vineyard began through an extraordinary late-life decision: after surgery in 2006, at ninety-six, von Bruemmer started the project within weeks and planted the first vines six months later.
His grandson Nicholas von Bruemmer now leads the estate, working with winemaker Jorge Rosa Santos in Colares. Atlantic winds and the Serra de Sintra define the coastal setting, with Malvasia de Colares joined in the modern vineyards by Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
