AboutCarlsberg

Jacob Christian Jacobsen founded Carlsberg on Valby Hill outside Copenhagen in 1847, naming the brewery after his son Carl and its hillside home. His study of Bavarian lager and yeast handling laid the groundwork for the Carlsberg Laboratory and a lasting commitment to brewing research.

In 1883, laboratory scientist Emil Christian Hansen developed a method for cultivating pure yeast, which Carlsberg shared freely with other brewers. The Carlsberg Foundation continues to support science, art and culture.
