AboutBattenfeld Spanier

Hans Oliver Spanier founded his own estate in 1991 after completing his winemaking training, working organically from the outset. He now runs Battenfeld Spanier with Carolin Spanier-Gillot. Biodynamic farming followed in 2005.

Battenfeld Spanier is based in Hohen-Sülzen at the southern end of the Wonnegau, where deep limestone banks store water through dry summers. Riesling is its main grape, followed by Pinot Noir. The estate joined the VDP in 2008.

Battenfeld-Spanier 2018 Hohen-Sülzen Riesling

German White
$48.99

Ripe peach and apricot unfold alongside tobacco, dried herbs and a subtle trace of liquorice. The palate finds a fine equilibrium between generous fruit and a clear mineral line, giving the wine both breadth and definition. Precise and elegant throughout, it gathers savoury detail before carrying into a remarkably long finish.

Battenfeld-Spanier 2019 Grüner Sylvaner

German White
$33.99

Fresh-cut meadow, hay and thyme lead a floral, understated nose. The palate is slender and lively, yet carries real depth from old-vine fruit, with well-integrated acidity, gentle power and a clean, persistent finish. Its restrained profile makes it especially versatile at the table. Serve well chilled with asparagus, herb-roasted chicken, freshwater fish or soft, mild cheeses.
