Puerto del Monte 2020 Mencía
Deep cherry colour with purple highlights appears alongside black fruit, tar, pencil lead and spice. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, with lively acidity, a touch of oak and a long fruit-driven finish. Mencía comes from forty-five-year-old vines around Villafranca del Bierzo at 450 to 700 metres. The wine spends two months on its lees in stainless steel and eight months in French and American oak.
Veronica Ortega 2023 Kinki Bierzo
Pale ruby colour accompanies raspberry, redcurrant and tart strawberry, with floral, herbal, saline and citrus notes. The palate has freshness, firm tannic structure and mineral character. Mencía is joined by Doña Blanca, Palomino, Godello and Alicante Bouschet from a single old-vine parcel. The varieties ferment together with whole stems, followed by eight months in 800-litre amphorae. Alcohol is eleven and a half percent.
Veronica Ortega 2022 La Llorona Godello
Citrus and apricot accompany toasted sunflower seeds and light chamomile. The profile is complex and mineral, with length. Godello comes from a thirty-five-year-old vineyard on sandy soils in Pieros at about 500 metres. The grapes are harvested by hand. Destemmed fruit ferments and matures for nine months in 225-, 500- and 600-litre French oak barrels.
