Antonio Scala
A third-generation, organically farmed estate in Cirò crafting pure, small-lot wines from Calabria’s native grapes.
Antonio Scala is one of Calabria’s most compelling small estates. Family-owned since 1949 and now led by Luigi and Francesco Scala, the winery is located in Cirò, a historic winegrowing zone on the Ionian coast. The Scalas farm just 18 hectares of organically tended vines, focusing entirely on native Calabrian varieties and traditional, low-intervention winemaking.
The vineyards lie on south-facing slopes between the sea and the Sila mountains, with sandy-clay soils and cooling maritime breezes that temper the southern heat. These natural conditions give the wines lift, freshness and an unmistakable sense of place. Everything is harvested by hand and vinified on-site in small lots, with meticulous attention to detail at every stage.
Antonio Scala works exclusively with local grapes—most notably Gaglioppo and Greco Bianco. The red and rosé wines are made entirely from Gaglioppo, Calabria’s flagship grape, known for its delicate aromatics, dry grip and mineral core. The white is pure Greco Bianco di Cirò, offering lifted citrus and orchard fruit with a saline edge. No international varieties are used—only estate-grown, indigenous fruit.
In the cellar, fermentation happens in stainless steel or open vats, and aging takes place almost entirely in concrete. New oak is avoided. This gentle, old-school approach preserves the clarity and texture of the fruit, letting the grape and site shine without interference. The result is a line of wines that feel unforced, energetic and deeply authentic.
The Scala label itself tells the story: a hand-drawn sketch by Antonio Scala still adorns every bottle, echoing the family’s commitment to heritage and simplicity. And while the scale is small—only about 8,000 cases annually—the ambition is clear. Scala wines are benchmarks for the new Calabria: rooted in tradition, organically grown, and uncompromisingly true to their origins.
In recent years, Cirò has begun to earn wider recognition, and producers like Scala are leading the charge. Their wines not only celebrate Calabria’s past but also point to a future defined by integrity, identity and quiet excellence.
