About Lorena Vásquez
Master Blender Lorena Vásquez has spent more than thirty-five years at Zacapa, guiding the blending and maturation of its Guatemalan rums. The rum begins with the first pressing of sugar cane grown in southern Guatemala, fermented with a yeast strain derived from pineapple.
It matures at roughly 2,300 metres in the cool, humid air of the House Above the Clouds. Vásquez works with casks that have held American whiskey, sherry and Pedro Ximénez, using Cognac casks for selected expressions. The handwoven petate bands on the bottles continue a tradition begun with Zacapa’s first release in 1976, now involving more than seven hundred women weavers.
