About Wente Family Vineyards
German immigrant Carl Wente established the family farm in Livermore Valley in 1883 after learning winemaking from Charles Krug. In 1912, Ernest Wente brought French Chardonnay cuttings to Livermore, laying the groundwork for the Wente Clone. The fifth generation now leads Wente Family Vineyards.
Today, the estate farms in Livermore Valley and cooler Arroyo Seco, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are important plantings. Its vineyards and winery are certified through California Sustainable Winegrowing, with cover crops, low-till farming and careful water management among its practices.
