About Marqués de Vargas
The de la Mata family's roots at Hacienda Pradolagar reach back to 1840, when Felipe de la Mata, the eighth Marqués de Vargas, planted its first vines. In 1989 Pelayo de la Mata and his siblings fulfilled their father's ambition by building a winery within the family estate in Rioja Alta. The wines come exclusively from the estate’s vineyards, which surround the winery.
Pradolagar’s 52 hectares are divided into 32 plots according to soil, climate and grape variety. Grapes are picked by hand in small boxes, cooled overnight and made into wine parcel by parcel before ageing in oak.
