"Domaine Calot’s high-altitude vineyards in the village of Villié-Morgon are rooted in pure granite and boast some incredibly old plantings (vieilles vignes), some exceeding 100 years of age. Vincent Calot took over the Domaine when his uncle, Jean, the estate’s long-time head, passed away in 2015. All the wines are hand-harvested and fermented on indigenous yeasts in stainless steel. Aging takes place in a combination of used, larger oak foudre and used barriques sourced from Burgundy. They are bottled unfined and unfiltered, producing some of the most consistent, transparent, and well-structured expressions of old-vine Gamay you'll find. The wines offer amazing value despite the ever-rising fortunes of Morgon."

Vineyard: La Morra
Production: 6,000 bottles
Soil: Marl & Limestone
Castagni vineyard lies at an altitude of 370 to 450 metres above sea level. Given the near perfect vintage, the 2016 Castagni offers beautiful drinking now but will most certainly reward cellaring. Incredible value for money here in such a pricey and sought after vintage. Lots of typical dark morello cherry and forest fruit, sweet spice and leather with a more savoury, smoky finish and firm but rounded tannins. This is a remarkably harmonious young Barolo.
Montezemolo Barolo Monfalleto 2018/19
$112.99
The Nebbiolo that comes off this property is some of the best in La Morra. Even in challenging vintages the Monfalletto terroir yields Nebbiolo that is both powerful and supple. Insiders know that this is one of the best terroirs in Barolo.
95 Points, Robert Parker: "The house style prizes muscle and brawn in this vintage that lends itself handily to these qualities. Pressed cherry and blackberry cede to licorice, cured tobacco and iron ore."
94 Points, Wine Spectator: "A plump, cherry-, raspberry- and tar-flavored red, showing accents of mineral, tobacco and eucalyptus, with a swath of solid tannins guarding the finish. Balanced and long, this should come around soon."
94 Points, James Suckling: "Attractive aromas of black cherry with strawberry and hints of vanilla and cedar. Some sandalwood. Medium body. Ultra-fine tannins integrate beautifully into the wine. Plenty of fruit flavors and length. Juicy."
